Dr. Rodolfo Gordigiani has long been dedicated to the field of gynaecological and obstetric research. His passion for advancing medicine has led him to collaborate with research institutes and universities around the world. Through innovative studies and clinical trials, we aim to develop new therapies and approaches to improve women's health. Our research covers a wide range of topics, from the prevention of gynaecological diseases to reproductive health. We are proud to contribute to the progress of medicine and to provide women with effective solutions for their well-being.
After graduating from the University of Florence, Dr. Gordigiani specialized in Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the same University under the guidance of Prof. GB Massi. He obtained a research scholarship and a master's degree in gynaecological oncology at the Gynaecological Clinic of Graz (Austria) under the guidance of the renowned Oncologist Prof. E. Burghardt. He completed the master's program at the NGOC centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Newcastle (England), directed by Prof. J.M. Monaghan.
As a gynaecologic oncologist, Dr. Gordigiani has dedicated much of his career to the study and treatment of ovarian, cervical, vaginal, and vulvar carcinomas, particularly focusing on the role played by specific viral strains (HPV, HIV) in the induction and progression of precancerous cervical lesions. His specialisation thesis, supported by the Colposcopy and Laser Surgery group at Careggi, led by Prof. M. Marchionni, asserted that the true promoter of cervical carcinoma is the human papillomavirus (HPV), a claim later definitively proven over the years. The first scientist to support this notion was Prof. H. zur Hausen, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2008.
Since then, vaccines have been developed to protect young women from these dangerous infectious agents, resulting in a steady decline in cervical carcinoma incidence among the female population. Dr. Gordigiani has also served as a professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the University of Florence.
Throughout his career, he has gained extensive experience in traditional surgical techniques, laparoscopic procedures, and colposcopy-guided laser surgery. He has also addressed all aspects of women's health, with particular emphasis on the female reproductive system, as well as other issues including obstetrics (pregnancy and childbirth), menstrual problems and fertility, sexually transmitted infections, and hormonal disorders. He has held leadership roles at the S. Giovanni di Dio Hospital in Florence and S. Giuseppe Hospital in Empoli.
Over the years, he has acquired in-depth skills in surgical and specifically oncological-surgical, laparoscopic, and reconstructive pelvic floor surgery, both abdominally and laparoscopically, as well as gynaecological laser surgery. He has performed (aggregated data): approximately 450 obstetric interventions, 1500 minor gynaecological interventions, 1070 major abdominal surgeries, approximately 160 urogynaecological interventions, approximately 600 level I laparoscopies, and 150 level II laparoscopies.
Thanks to his studies and practice in the profession, he has achieved decision-making autonomy and high operational specialization in the following fields:
• Obstetric Pathology and High-Risk Pregnancy
• Ambulatory surgical techniques performed using CO2 Laser (numerous national and international publications, national and international masters, presentations at national and international conferences, university teaching)
• Video laparoscopic surgical techniques such as level II surgeries (complex myomectomies, totally laparoscopic hysterectomies, treatment of severe stage III-IV endometriosis, lymphadenectomies in case of genital cancers) (presentations at national and international conferences, national level II masters, university teaching)
• Prosthetic pelvic floor surgery techniques including minimally invasive techniques
• Surgical techniques related to Gynaecological Oncology performed with classical methodology (presentations at national and international conferences, international masters, university teaching)
